Our story

At Angel Food, we believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the comfort and joy of cheese — without compromise.

Our mission is simple: to make it easy (and tasty) for more people to choose plant-based meals more often — for the good of people, animals, and the planet.

And that’s exactly what we’ve been doing, since 2006.

How it all began

Angel Food was founded by Alice Shopland, a passionate vegan entrepreneur who wanted to make plant-based eating more accessible and joyful. When Alice went vegan in 2004, she loved her new lifestyle and its positive impacts. But she missed the creamy, melty cheese she’d grown up with. Rather than accept that as a limitation, she decided to do something about it.

Two years later, Angel Food was born — the first company in New Zealand dedicated to vegan cheese alternatives. What started as a tiny import business has grown into a trusted locally-made brand that’s proudly stocked in supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants across the country.

What we stand for

We’re more than just a cheese company. We’re part of a growing movement towards a kinder, more sustainable food system. Everything we do is guided by three core values:

Kindness – We believe compassion belongs in every part of life — including what’s on our plates. Our products are, and always will be, 100% vegan.

Sustainability – We’re committed to reducing the environmental impact of food production. By choosing plant-based ingredients, we help cut greenhouse gas emissions, save water, and use land more efficiently.

Joy – Eating should be fun! We want our products to spark smiles and make plant-based living delicious and easy, whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or just curious.

We also love innovation. That’s why we’re constantly experimenting in the kitchen, developing new ways to bring the goodness of plants to your table, whether it’s new recipes on our website or new products to launch.
