Giving up cheese is unthinkable for many people. That's why we sampled our way around the globe until we found the world's best non-dairy cheese. That cheese is Cheezly and it's made by Redwood Foods in the UK, and Angel Food is proud to be the New Zealand importer and distributor for this fine product.
Redwood make all sorts of fancy cheese flavours but we like to keep things simple, so we import just the two basic variants: white cheddar and super-melting mozzarella. Both are delicious and versatile, but as a general rule the cheddar is more for eating on crackers and the mozzarella is more for cooking. Cheezly is GE-free.
White Cheddar Ingredients: Water, potato starch, non-hydrogenated vegetable fats and oils, soya protein, yeast extract, carrageenan (as thickener), salt, flavouring, carotene. Total fat content: approx. 18.4%
Super-melting Mozzarella Ingredients: Water, non-hydrogenated vegetable fats and oils, soya protein, starch, carrageenan and locust bean gum (as thickeners) salt, yeast extract, calcium phosphate and potassium phosphate(emulsifying salts), raw cane sugar, flavour, herbs, spices, annatto and beta carotene. If you open the pack but don’t expect to use it all up within about seven days, wrap it well and store in the freezer. It'll be fine in there for many months. Once defrosted, it will be quite crumbly and won't slice tidily, but if you're using it for cooking that's no problem at all.
Take five: Being much lower in fat than dairy cheese, Cheezly dries out more quickly. If you're using it to top a dish like lasagne or pizza, either add the Cheezly just for the last five minutes of the cooking time, or keep it covered until the last five minutes.
For the most luscious toasted Cheezly sandwich, spray the inside of your bread (ie the side that'll be next to the Cheezly) with water, or just run it quickly under the tap. Sounds odd but it works a treat!
Some desserts just need a dollop of luscious whipped cream, right? Here it is! Soyatoo! is made with organic soya beans, is lightly sweetened, and whips up beautifully. It's also relatively low in fat (11% compared with approx. 25% fat in dairy whipping cream).
